PURPOSE: HOW CAN YOU USE A COOKING TECHNIQUE TO EXPLAIN A SCIENCE CONCEPT?
CHECKLIST:
- Research background information for your project.
- The exploratorium website is your starting point: http://www.exploratorium.edu/cooking/index.html
- RECORD all your research work and planned steps in experimental design on GOOGLE DRIVE using the LABORATORY REPORT FORMAT (Scientific Method). Share with your Teacher to edit.
- DECIDE on an Adult (18 years upward) partner who will be responsible for safety in your kitchen and recording (video) your project with you in the “starring” role.
- Choose your TOPIC based on your research ideas. Technique ideas to think about: (a) Phase transitions— example: a super -cooled desert
(b) Elasticity— example: candy making and crystallization. (c ) Gelation — examples: gelling agents in the kitchen -Pectin. (d) Energy/Temperature/Heat. Example- eggs or ricotta cheese. (e) Emulsions and foams… examples mayo or pavlova.
(f) Baking — yeast or baking soda for best gas production. (g) Heat Transfer— molten chocolate cake. (h) Fermentation — pickles or ginger beer (soft drink).
- Presentation requires a video and complete explanation of your project. You may choose the design (prezi, ppt, etc) of how to present your project but are required to follow the scientific method used in the laboratory report format.
